US Open to extend tournament by one day, start on Sunday 8/24

by | Feb 1, 2025

The US Open announced this week that it will be extending the annual tournament in Flushing by one day, starting on Sunday, August 24, instead of the previously announced Monday, August 25.

The move follows the Australian and French Opens doing the same thing, The French Open made the change in 2006, while the Australian Open made the change in 2024.

There are two great things about this for fans. First, by extending the schedule, they have created six new ticketing sessions, meaning that more fans will have the opportunity to attend the tournament. Second, the inclusion of the previous Sunday now creates a third weekend where fans can attend the tournament. Since few fans can access the finals weekend, this will create at least a second weekend where visiting fans can try to see the event.

On the scheduling front, the extra day also creates more stadium-visiting opportunities for fans. The Red Sox will be playing the Yankees at Yankee Stadium from Thursday 8/21 to Sunday 8/24, so fans could do a Yankees/US Open weekend (or even a Yankees day game followed by a US Open evening session doubleheader on Sunday).

Meanwhile, the New York Liberty will play the Chicago Sky on Thurdsay 8/21, and Gothan FC will play Utah on Saturday 8/23.

Plus, the Yankees will start a three-game series against the Nationals on Monday 8/25, and the Mets will start a three-game series against the Phillies that day as well. It’s one of only two spans where the Mets and Yankees are both playing at their home stadiums in New York at the same time.
