In news that had been previously leaked but not finalized, today came the official announcement that everyone was waiting for: Wrigley Field will host the 2027 MLB All-Star Game.

The last time the game was held at Wrigley was 1990, and, to be sure, quite a bit has changed since then. The ballpark underwent a $740 million renovation from 2014-2019, which reinforced all of the cement in the building, expanded and rebuilt the bleachers, created five new premium clubs, installed jumbotrons (for the first time), and renovated the concourses, restrooms, and concession stands. It also created Gallagher Way, the park outside of the stadium, in addition to the adjoining bars and retail shops.
At the same time, the building across the street that houses the Zachary Hotel, owned by the Cubs’ real estate company, was also completed. The combined projects have significantly transformed the neighborhood into what many industry experts believe is a showpiece for stadium renovations.
Given the significant renovation, it was widely believed that Major League Baseball would return the MLB All-Star Game to Wrigley. But when news broke earlier in the year that it might happen, the brakes were slammed on for what was later revealed to be security issues. Conversations with Chicago’s local government about installing security barriers and other protective initiatives were necessary before the game could be awarded. The City Council approved a plan in June to address that.
So now here we are, with the game scheduled for Tuesday, July 13, 2027. The Home Run Derby will be on Monday, July 12, and we expect there will be very little standing room on Waveland Avenue behind the outfield during the event. And for many, that could be as close as they get to the action.
How will tickets be made available?
Well, as with most All-Star Games, tickets will be limited. While the capacity at Wrigley is consistent with that of many other ballparks (about 40,000), the demand for this event will be absolutely through the roof. Cubs season ticket holders might be entered into a lottery for a limited set of tickets, but for the most part, we think this could be the most difficult ASG ticket in quite some time.
In other cities, there have been both presales and general onsales for these games, but we wouldn’t be surprised if such options are limited this time around. But stay tuned, and we’ll let you know more details as they are announced. As of right now, there’s no registration or other action necessary.
What could go wrong?
Well, plenty. The current Collective Bargaining Agreement between the players and Major League Baseball will expire after the 2026 season, and rumors of a lockout are consistently flying from those who understand these things the best. If such a work stoppage occurred, there’s no telling if the All-Star Game would be played as scheduled.
The previous work stoppage in 2022 resulted in a delayed start to the season, but the All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium proceeded as scheduled. Even the extended strike in 1994-1995 didn’t result in the game being canceled, so let’s all keep our fingers crossed for a similar outcome.
