WNBA moves a Finals game, while Atlanta Hawks adjust home opener to accommodate a basketball doubleheader.

The Atlanta Dream will play their home games in the 2026 WNBA Finals at State Farm Arena after a series of scheduling changes involving the WNBA, NBA and Atlanta Hawks resolved conflicts that initially threatened to keep the team out of the downtown Atlanta venue.

The Dream announced Tuesday that Games 3 and 4 of their championship series against the Golden State Valkyries will take place at the 17,000-seat arena, rather than the much smaller Gateway Center Arena in College Park, where the team played most of its regular-season home games.

The arrangement required the WNBA to move Game 3 up one day and the Hawks to push back the starting time of their NBA home opener, creating a rare WNBA-NBA doubleheader at State Farm Arena.

How the Scheduling Conflicts Were Resolved

The Dream initially faced conflicts on all three dates they were scheduled to host WNBA Finals games.

Game 3 was originally scheduled for Thursday, October 22, but State Farm Arena was already booked for a concert by singer Sombr. The WNBA agreed to move the game to Wednesday, October 21, at 8 p.m., allowing the concert to proceed as scheduled.

Game 4 presented a different challenge. The Dream were scheduled to play on Saturday, October 24, the same day the Hawks were hosting the Houston Rockets in their regular-season home opener.

Rather than relocate either game, the teams agreed to share the building.

The Dream will host the Valkyries at 1 p.m., while the Hawks-Rockets game will begin at 8:30 p.m., giving arena staff several hours to prepare the building between games.

The arrangement will require a rapid turnaround involving the court, team facilities, signage, concessions and other game-day operations.

The Dream and Hawks credited the NBA, WNBA, Golden State Valkyries and broadcast partners for helping make the changes possible.

Why State Farm Arena Matters

The venue decision is particularly significant because of the enormous difference in seating capacity between the Dream’s two home arenas.

Gateway Center Arena, located near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, seats approximately 3,500 spectators for basketball. State Farm Arena can accommodate approximately 17,000.

The Dream played six regular-season home games at State Farm Arena this year, along with their three earlier home playoff games. Those postseason contests attracted an average of approximately 9,695 fans, nearly three times the capacity of Gateway Center Arena.

Playing the Finals at Gateway Center would therefore have substantially limited attendance for the biggest games in franchise history.

The larger venue also provides the Dream with an opportunity to capitalize on growing interest in the team as it pursues its first WNBA championship.

Atlanta is making its first Finals appearance since 2013, having previously reached the championship series in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

A Preview of the Dream’s Permanent Move

The scheduling resolution comes just one week after the Dream announced that State Farm Arena will become their full-time home beginning with the 2027 WNBA season.

Under a new multi-year agreement, the Dream will play all 25 regular-season home games at the arena next year, coinciding with the WNBA’s expansion to a 50-game regular season.

The team previously played at the downtown venue, then known as Philips Arena, from its inaugural season in 2008 through 2016.

The move represents a major increase in potential ticket inventory and reflects the growing demand for WNBA basketball in Atlanta.

For the Dream, the opportunity to host the 2026 Finals at State Farm Arena effectively provides an early showcase for the franchise’s future home.

One Scheduling Question Remains

While the Dream and Hawks have confirmed arrangements for Games 3 and 4, the location of a potential Game 6 remains unresolved in the initial announcement.

That game is scheduled for Thursday, October 29, when the Hawks are also scheduled to host the Cleveland Cavaliers at State Farm Arena.

If the championship series extends to six games, another scheduling accommodation may be necessary.

The WNBA Finals begin Saturday, October 17, at Chase Center in San Francisco, with the Valkyries hosting the first two games.

Tickets for the Dream’s confirmed home games at State Farm Arena are scheduled to go on sale to the general public Friday, October 16, at 10 a.m.

Doubleheader Digest

Mercedes Benz Stadium

Aside from the obvious WNBA/NBA doubleheader that is being created, there’s plenty more going on in Atlanta during the weekend when Game 2 will be played.

On Saturday night, Atlanta United FC will host the Chicago Fire at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which is literally next door to State Farm Arena. So if you were more interested in a basketball/soccer doubleheader, this is a great opportunity.

While it may create a less-than-favorable schedule, Georgia Tech hosts Boston College at 3:30pm ET on Saturday as well. The times don’t match up well, but Bobby Dodd Stadium is a quick 10-minute car ride away, so it’s doable.

And finally, on Sunday, the Atlanta Falcons will host the San Francisco 49ers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
