Well, once the NFL announced that it was going to have a game in Sao Paulo this year, and that the Eagles would be the host team, the next shoe to drop was the announcement of an opponent. And on Wednesday they made it official: it’s the Green Bay Packers.
So now you’ll have Cheese Nation descending upon South America on the heels of Cheesesteak Nation, so someone should probably tell Brazil that they’re going to need a lot more cows between now and September.
While these games are often celebrated, not everyone is happy about the matchup. Our Philadelphia correspondent tells us that Eagles Nation isn’t too thrilled with losing a home game from their schedule this season, especially after having only eight regular season home games last year. With the NFL’s new scheduling system, the Eagles would have had a ninth home game in 2024, but now that game will be played in Sao Paulo, a place that, as our friend said, is way harder to get to than New England.
The game will be played at Corinthians Arena, which is home to Brazilian soccer club SC Corinthians. The capacity for the stadium is only 47,000+, which will make it the smallest audience for an NFL home game unless the Oakland A’s start playing football. So why would the NFL pick such a small venue for the game? Our guess is that the locals in Sao Paulo may not be willing to shell out the dollars that it will cost to attend, keeping demand somewhat lower. When you throw in the cost and difficulty of US fans getting to Brazil as well, the NFL was probably smart enough to know that there would likely not be 85,000 fans in attendance like there were at Wembley Stadium in London last fall.
Nevertheless, if heading down to Brazil to see the cheese bowl is on your list of priorities, the only way to purchase tickets right now is through OnLocation, the NFL’s official travel partner. You can place a fully refundable $500 deposit right now to secure your place in line. But keep in mind: that deposit will be for a full travel package, not just tickets, and you can expect that it will cost top dollar.
