Where to stay in Phoenix

As sprawling as the Phoenix metro area is, there are really only a couple of places where we’d recommend visitors stay if they’re coming into town for a baseball trip: downtown Phoenix, Tempe, and Scottsdale. Sure, there are other places you could go, but these three are the places that will provide the best in convenience, things to do, and hotel options.

When it comes to hotel options, spring is going to be the most expensive time of year for lodging, since that’s when the weather is the most pleasant. But if you can handle the heat (or if your travel schedule just shapes up that way), traveling to Phoenix in the summer will provide a more affordable experience. With so many options to choose from, this guide will help break down where to kick up your feet after a day at the ballpark.

Staying at the Airport

Airport hotels are another option as Sky Harbor is only a 10-15-minute car ride away from the stadium. However, there’s nothing around the direct vicinity of the airport that would compel you to stay there unless you’re taking an early flight the morning after the game (but even then, downtown Phoenix is only 10-15 minutes away from Sky Harbor Airport by car, so you wouldn’t be saving that much time by staying at the airport). Many airport hotels offer free shuttles, so that might be a way to save some money on rideshare/taxi fees getting to your hotel, but you’ll still need to get to the ballpark on your own.

Other Areas

Phoenix is a sprawling metropolis consisting of many different suburbs. Most have no reason to go there, but we’ll provide a quick overview.

Mesa – 25-minute drive. Nothing of interest other than Sloan Park, the Cubs Spring Training home. It’s a relevant place to stay for that, but not really for anything else.

Gilbert/Chandler – 30-minute drive. This is the east valley, and where there has been a population explosion over the past 15 years.  But there’s nothing of particular note that we would tell you to do here. It would, however, be a less expensive place to stay, but that cost would be offset by your transportation costs to get to/from the ballpark.

Glendale – 25-minute drive. Home of the Arizona Cardinals, so if you’re doing a September D’Backs-Cardinals weekend, staying here would be a good idea, especially since football is an all-day activity. State Farm Stadium is also right across the street from the Westgate Shopping Center and the Tanger Outlet Shops, so there’s a ton of places to eat and shop at here.

Bottom Line

Downtown Phoenix is going to put you closest to Chase Field, but Tempe and Scottsdale offer more attractive options for other activities. Scottsdale is the most high-end area but is the furthest away from the stadium (20-35 minute car ride). If saving money on rideshare/taxis is important to you then Downtown (walkable) or Tempe (along the light rail) are your best bet.
