It would be big news, if only MLB would just go ahead and announce it. But since they won’t, we will – at least unofficially. It appears that the Kansas City Royals and Boston Red Sox will play at Field of Dreams in 2027.
When the tentative MLB schedule was announced in July, a glance at the typical date for the Field of Dreams game revealed a slate of five planned games, with the home teams being Toronto, Houston, Colorado, Arizona, and the <no city attached> Athletics.
But then, a screenshot popped up on Reddit of the Red Sox’s Instagram feed, showing a game at Kansas City on Thursday, August 12, followed by an off-day, and then two more games in Kansas City. Which is the exact format that all Field of Dreams matchups have taken.
The post was quickly taken down, and there’s no trace of it online. But then two things followed that up:
- An email sent by the Kansas City Royals to their season ticket holders announcing that there will be a home game away from Kauffman in 2027, and that their season ticket packages were being adjusted accordingly.
- OnLocation, the hospitality partner of the event, started offering premium package deposits for the Field of Dreams game, specifically targeted at Royals and Red Sox fans.
Interestingly, while we were writing this story, both of those deposit pages were disabled. But we captured screenshots, just in case.
So whether MLB has announced it or not, it seems like a pretty solid conclusion that Kansas City and Boston will be playing in Iowa next year. At least … maybe.
Because this all assumes that there is a 2027 season at all. With the expiration of MLB’s collective bargaining agreement after the current season ends, most experts expect a contentious negotiation that could drag on into the season. There are more than a few pundits who predict there may not be a 2027 season at all.
Next steps
So what does that mean for fans? Well, until those links were disabled, we would have suggested that placing a refundable deposit for hospitality tickets would have been a good idea. But now, there’s no choice but to wait for more ticket information to be released.
As for travel plans, hotels for Dyersville and the surrounding areas have already been adjusted for the event, so there aren’t any bargains to be had unless you look further out in places like Cedar Rapids, Davenport, or even Des Moines.
For Boston Red Sox fans who might want to go to Kansas City for the rest of the series, the drive from Field of Dreams to Kauffman Stadium is 6-7 hours. And you could certainly make a refundable hotel and rental car reservation if you’re thinking of making the trip. Without question, flights into and out of Kansas City will be easier to come by than out of Dubuque or the other regional airports.
