The Kansas City Chiefs published renderings of their plans for a new stadium set to be completed in 2031 in Kansas City, Kansas. The $3 billion stadium, showcasing a translucent glass ceiling on the enclosed arena, will be designed to maximize fan noise, preserving the Chiefs’ current home-field advantage at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Chiefs hope to attract a Super Bowl and NCAA tournaments to the new stadium, as well as mitigate any event cancellations due to rising instances of inclement weather. After five decades at Arrowhead Stadium, the team will make the 20-minute move from Kansas City, Missouri, to Kansas City, Kansas following the close of the 2030 season.
The Chiefs join a growing list of NFL teams that are building or looking to build new stadiums. The NFL awarded the 2030 Super Bowl LXIV to the Tennessee Titans, whose new Nissan Stadium will be completed in 2027 with a translucent roof of its own. The Cleveland Browns are leaving downtown for the suburbs and a domed stadium in 2029. The Washington Commanders are moving back to D.C. from Maryland to construct a stadium on their original RFK site, due for completion in 2030. And the Denver Broncos are building a retractable roof stadium close to the current Mile High Stadium, which is set to open in 2031.
The Buffalo Bills will open their new open-air stadium this fall directly across the street from the old Highmark Stadium.
That leaves the Chicago Bears, who play at the iconic Soldier Field and are now in the fifth year of a never-ending drama of finding a site for their new stadium. They have tentatively decided on a location in Hammond, Indiana, but plans to move into the new venue by 2030 seem iffy at best.
What this means for fans
The Chiefs’ design team took inspiration from the current stadium and will build 70,000 seats and 20,000 parking spots for the ultimate tailgating and gameday experience. They are trying to preserve as much of the Arrowhead fan experience as they can, while improving the experience for fans unable to weather extreme cold or rain. The Chiefs’ famous pre-game flyover will be just as visible through the translucent roof, team officials say, as it would on the current, open field. The Drum Deck and Ring of Honor will also survive the 12-mile move.
