It’s going to be a big year in 2027 for the Chicago Cubs with special events. The 2027 All-Star Game will be played at Wrigley Field in July, and now it has been announced that the Cubs will take on the Toronto Blue Jays at the Little League Classic in Williamsport, PA next August.
The announcement
MLB announced the matchup during this year’s Little League Classic. The game will take place on Thursday, August 19, which is a departure from the normal scheduling pattern, which has typically been for the game to be played on Sunday. But it appears MLB wants to handle this game the same way it does the Field of Dreams game, with the teams playing on a Thursday, having a travel day on Friday, and then playing the remainder of a three-game series at the appropriate MLB stadium.
In this case, the Cubs will travel to Toronto, where the Blue Jays will host the Saturday and Sunday games at Rogers Centre on August 21 and 22.
How to get tickets to the Little League Classic
Unfortunately, tickets are extremely difficult to get because there is typically no public onsale. The game is played at Historic Bowman Field, which only has a capacity of around 2300. Which means that by the time tickets are allocated to players, MLB, sponsors, VIP’s, and local residents (there is a special lottery for those who live in Lycoming County, where Williamsport is located), there isn’t anything left for a general public onsale.
The only real path (other than having an inside connection) might be to look for tickets on a resale site, but we expect inventory to be extremely limited, since the only source would be those local residents.Â
Travel challenges
Assuming you could get tickets, travel planning is a serious challenge as well. There are only a handful of hotels in the town, so finding lodging is extremely difficult. And large cities such as Pittsburgh, Newark, and Philadelphia are several hours away. So if you’re going, you’re likely driving for an hour or two (or more) after the game ends.
Your best bet will be using a travel site like Expedia to search across all hotel brands, hoping that maybe something has snuck through, or checking out a vacation rental site such as AirBNB.
Bottom line
Of course, all of this assumes that there is a season played in 2027, which seems to be in question as the MLB contract with the Players Union expires this year. So right now, these are cool things to think about, but hardly a sure thing.
But even if there is a game, the challenges of actually attending it are significant, and thus it’s not something that we think you should set your heart on. But if you can find tickets, now would be a good time to start looking into cancelable/refundable lodging options.
