UCLA football to remain at Rose Bowl in 2026

by | Mar 1, 2026

After months of uncertainty, UCLA announced that it would continue to play football games at the iconic Rose Bowl in Pasadena for at least another season, temporarily postponing a legal battle between the University, the City of Pasadena, and the Rose Bowl itself.

In October of last year, both Pasadena and the Rose Bowl Operating Company filed a lawsuit against UCLA for attempting to prematurely abandon its lease at the stadium, which runs through 2044, in favor of playing its home games at SoFi Stadium. As the brand new home to two NFL teams, SoFi features a wide array of premium box seats and suites, an attractive amenity that the 103-year old Rose Bowl does not offer. The university claimed that because of the stadium’s lack of premium seating options, it is losing out on $15-$25 million in revenue each season. Additionally, SoFi Stadium is approximately 13 miles closer to the university, making it easier for Bruins fans to attend games.

What it means for fans

UCLA’s announcement that its games would be played in Pasadena for at least one more season provides a temporary respite for UCLA fans who prefer playing at the Rose Bowl for its history and prestige. But even more, it provides those fans who have never seen a UCLA game at the Rose Bowl at least one more year to do so. Since the Bruins joined the Big Ten in 2024, they have hosted Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, Penn State, USC, and Washington. In 2026, their Big Ten lineup will include Illinois, Michigan State, Purdue, and Wisconsin in Pasadena, along with non-conference matchups against San Diego State and Nevada

Anyone who wants to attend a game should do their best to make it this year during the regular season, when tickets are much more affordable compared to those sold for the Rose Bowl Game which is played as part of the College Football Playoff each year.

Bottom line

The clock is clearly ticking on UCLA football remaining in Pasadena. The UCLA athletics department is carrying over $200 million in debt, a shortfall that could ultimately prompt a move to SoFi Stadium in the upcoming years.

Although this saga almost certainly isn’t over, the assurance that the Bruins will play at the Rose Bowl in 2026 gives fans at least some stability with which to plan their upcoming football season. Unfortunately, Michigan, Northwestern, Ohio State, and Rutgers fans may not get the chance to see their team at the Rose Bowl. Stay tuned for more.
