Following up on their December announcement of a 2026 game in Munich at the Allianz Arena, the NFL revealed today that the Detroit Lions will be the host team.
The news means that the Lions will lose a home game at Ford Field. The team was scheduled to host one preseason and nine regular-season games this year, but the regular-season games will be reduced to eight.
Given how many games the NFL is now playing internationally, it’s becoming more and more difficult to guess which of their 2026 home opponents will join them in Germany. The Lions are scheduled to host the Bears, Packers, Vikings, Saints, Bucs, Patriots, Jets, Titans, and Giants this season.
The Saints have already been designated to play in Paris as a home team, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t be tabbed as the away team in Germany a week before or after. None of the other teams have been assigned to an international game, so it’s anybody’s guess as to who might be picked.
Next steps
There’s no game date announced yet, so it’s too early to start making any travel plans. The only thing to do right now is to start thinking about whether a game in Munich is something that you might want to attend, and you can also sign up here for updates directly from the NFL about tickets.
