The ACC has announced that the NC State and Virginia matchup has been relocated to the Cavaliers’ home field just 3 months before the game was set to take place in Rio. The game was scheduled for August 29th in week zero as both teams’ first conference game of the 2026 season. ESPN has confirmed that the match remains on August 29th with kickoff at 3:30 pm EST.
Fans who purchased tickets or travel packages through the official College Football Brasil website will receive refunds. But for those who made travel plans on their own, you’ll need to cancel your own reservations and will be subject to whatever the refund policy is for those travel providers.Â
While the Cavaliers gain a home game and the Wolfpack gain an easier travel recovery, the rest of both teams’ schedules will remain unaffected.
NCAA Football struggling for international influence
This was going to be the first NCAA football game played in South America, but was ultimately canceled by the third-party event organizer, Athlete Advantage. As the NCAA continues to push for international games, they frequently run into a problem that the NFL can avoid.
When the NFL executes an international game, they are acting as their own promoter through initiatives such as their Global Markets Program, which gives NFL clubs access to marketing, commercialization, and fan engagement internationally. In contrast, the NCAA must rely on independent middleman agencies to help fund and execute international games.
Between the costs of securing a stadium, flights, and hotels, and the risk of limited interest or weak ticket sales, it can be difficult to find an event organizer willing to provide logistical and financial support for the project.
Other international games planned for this year
Currently, only one other NCAA football game is scheduled to be played internationally in the 2026 season. UNC and TCU are set to face off at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland, on August 29th at 5pm Dublin time (12pm EST).
This game is part of the ongoing Aer Lingus College Football Classic, which has been extended through 2027. These events are supported by reputable organizations, including Anthony Travel and Ireland’s national tourism department. It is unclear if this series will continue to be extended, but connections between the NCAA and Ireland remain strong.
